Austintown's Mahoning Avenue Is Filling In From Both Ends This Fall

October 22, 2026

Austintown usually sees one or two new businesses in a year, township zoning inspector Dominic Moltchan told WFMJ as this year's run of announcements started piling up. By late October, Mahoning Avenue alone has two new restaurants serving customers, three more with signs, permits or announced opening months, and a 24/7 indoor golf room set to open the first day of November.

Where they're landing tells you what kind of places they are. The two restaurants already serving customers sit in the 5500 and 5600 blocks near Route 46, and both are chain franchise drive-thrus. Most of what's still coming clusters in the 4400 to 4700 blocks around Idaho Road. Those businesses mostly have followings elsewhere in the Mahoning Valley and are moving into buildings that are already standing.

The Route 46 end is already pouring coffee and slicing subs

The newest building on the strip is also its smallest. 7 Brew opened to the public on Monday, Oct. 12, at 5620 Mahoning Ave., after a soft opening the weekend before, WKBN reported. It is a drive-thru coffee stand that opens at 5:30 a.m. every day. It sits on the north side of the avenue next to Refresh Dental, directly across from Chick-fil-A.

That corner looked very different in June. AnCar Place, a strip plaza that had stood at the northeast corner of Mahoning and Howard avenues since 1955, came down in a single day, according to WFMJ. Its tenants over the years had included a barber shop, a tax service, a vape shop and a tattoo parlor. The one-acre lot had sold for $1.1 million on June 16 to Brew and Build Real Properties LLC, Mahoning Matters reported. Mahoning Matters later put the finished stand at $1.7 million. Plans filed with the township called for a building of about 500 square feet.

The project needed a formal rezoning, which went through the Austintown Zoning Commission, the Mahoning County Planning Commission and the Austintown Township Trustees. Part of the property had been zoned residential. The approval required a 30-foot buffer between the commercial property and nearby homes. This is the third 7 Brew in the region. The first two, at 2421 East State St. in Salem and 1997 Niles-Cortland Road in Howland Township, opened over the winter of 2025 to 2026.

A short way down the same stretch, Jersey Mike's opened at 5536 Mahoning Ave. on Wednesday morning, Sept. 16. It is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily, WKBN reported. It took a spot in the plaza across from the Weston Center, next to McDonald's and Pulp. The store hired about 50 people. The franchise belongs to Cedartown Foods, LLC of Rome, Georgia, and Austintown is its 14th location. Its grand-opening week raised money for the Austintown Fitch High School Athletics Department.

Each comes from an operator with locations in other towns, and each is set up to serve customers quickly.

The Idaho Road end is filling with names the Valley already knows

Head east toward Idaho Road and the businesses change character. Nearly every new arrival here already has a following somewhere else in the Mahoning Valley, and most are moving into buildings that are already standing.

  • 330 BBQ and Catering, 4750 Mahoning Ave. Owner Scott Davis told WFMJ he expected to open in late October or early November. The southern-style barbecue catering business has been around for decades, and the Austintown spot gives it a physical location. The plan is Texas-style barbecue with meat ordered by the pound and sliced in front of the customer, traditional sides, counter service, and dine-in or carryout. Catering continues.
  • Capriotti's Sandwich Shop, 4769 Mahoning Ave. The shop is going into Marc's Plaza at the corner of Idaho Road. It plans to open sometime in November, according to a Facebook post covered by WFMJ. The chain already has restaurants in Canfield and Niles, and its menu leans on pastrami, fresh turkey, Wagyu beef and Philly steak sandwiches.
  • Red Rican, 4500 Mahoning Ave. This will be the fourth brick-and-mortar location for the Puerto Rican restaurant the Morales brothers started three years ago with a single food truck, WKBN reported on July 29. It is taking over the building that used to house the Upstairs restaurant. WKBN later added an editor's note saying no opening date had been announced. As of this week, the Red Rican website lists the address with every day marked closed.
  • Phoenix Nail Lounge, 4491 Mahoning Ave. It is already open, and it may be the clearest example of this end's pattern. Owner Jessica Montes de Oca held a ribbon cutting on June 24 after moving from a rented suite in Girard into a standalone salon. It takes appointments only, Mahoning Matters reported.

Red Rican, Capriotti's and 330 BBQ each grew from a single location or a catering business into a chain of their own, and each picked Austintown as a next step. 7 Brew needed a demolition and a rezoning to open. None of the Idaho Road arrivals is building from the ground up.

Off the main strip, one more familiar name

The same pattern shows up on Route 46. C's Waffles already has locations in Boardman, North Lima and Hubbard. In July it put up a sign at 15 N. Canfield Niles Road, in the building that used to house Korea Restaurant, Business Journal Daily reported. No opening date had been announced then.

Something to do after dinner, any hour

Not every new arrival is a restaurant. Neighborhood Swing, an indoor golf simulator, is setting up in Falcon Commons Plaza at Mahoning and Evans avenues, WFMJ reported. The Neighborhood Swing website announces an opening date of Nov. 1, 2026. It promises 24/7 access to two private bays with more than 2,500 courses, turf and impact screens, smart TVs, and a seating lounge for practice, league-style competition, lessons or casual rounds. Golf season in Northeast Ohio is ending, and this opening adds a place to swing a club at 11 p.m. in January.

The new-arrivals list, address by address

Status as of Thursday, Oct. 22, based on the most recent local reporting and each business's own announcements.

The calendar suggests the Idaho Road end could look quite different by Thanksgiving. If 330 BBQ and Capriotti's both open in their announced windows, two of the strip's newest restaurants will sit on facing parcels, 4750 and 4769, within weeks of each other.

This Saturday, Oct. 24, has one more Mahoning Avenue stop. Gateways to Better Living is hosting its free Not So Haunted House at Austintown Plaza, next to the Post Office, from noon to 3 p.m., according to WKBN's fall events listing.
